History of Balignac
The name derives from the Gallo-Roman term «ballinius».
It used to be a temporary roman site and it was located in the highest point of the area known as “La Salle”. This name comes from the term used to name some fortified houses. The hamlet of Massocs was located in la Rouquette area. Both names, Massocs and La Salle, were recorded in a document of the 16th century listing all cities, villages, castles and fortified sites belonging to the Armagnac County. Between the 17th and the 18th century both lands became the possession of the sole lord of Balignac.
Although the principal resource of this area was undoubtedly agriculture, in the 17th century 17 potters and 6 pottery workshops were listed.
