History of Gariès
The name derives from the Latin term “gallinarum” (place for breeding the chicken), or from the name of a Gallic populace, the “garites”.
Gariès was first recorded in a document of 1317 amongst the parishes making up the Montauban diocese, but it is known that in 1265 this land was granted with a Land Charter by the Lords of Léaumont.
The village was fortified in 1368 and a brand new village area was built around a communal square. The castle was placed a little bit away from the village; today traces of the very first building still remain.
In the 16th century Saint-Jacques was the parish church; it was destroyed by the Huguenots in 1587 and it was rebuilt in the 17th century.
