History of Gramont
The name derives from the Latin term «acrimonte» (high mountain).
The name of Simon de Montfort is linked to the castle origins, as he confiscated the tower of Gramont from the Vicount of Lomagne and he gave it to Eudes de Montaut on the 25th September 1215. These lands passed to the possession of the Voisins family by marriage in 1491. Afterwards they were acquired by the Parabère family, by the Coulet family and by the Baron of Monbel (Charles X's minister).
The original church of Gramont, Saint-Sauvy, was built in Romanic style and was located far away East from the village. This church was sold as national property during the Revolution and it stopped being the parish church in the 18th century.
When the department of Gers was created, in 1790, Gramont belonged to the Saint-Clar canton (as Marsac). In 1808 Napoleon 1st decided to include both villages in the brand new department of Tarn et Garonne.
