History of Lamothe-Cumont
The name derives from the feudal lump of earth over which the village was built.
The history of Lamothe and Cumont is the same until the 15th century. At that time the village of Lamothe had an increasing population as well as an increasing economic activity; its independence was sanctioned in the Land Charter signed by Guiraud de Garlard in 1471.
From the 13th century its population decided to establish itself around the wooden feudal tower. The church was built down the village and it was included in the Priory of Cumont in 1249. These lands were acquired in the 18th century by the Caissaigneau family; some of their members used to occupy an important position in the Toulouse parliament.
In 1808 Lamothe-Cumont was removed from the department of Haute-Garonne to be included in the brand new department of Tarn et Garonne.
