History of Lavit
The name derives from the term “Vic-de-Lomagne”.
Lavit bourg was born at the crossroads made up by two very ancient routes: «Le chemin des beurriers» that links the Pyrenees to Auvergne, and the route linking Mediterranean Sea to Atlantic Ocean through Toulouse. Lomagne country was born, though, around this road bourg called first “Vic de Lomagne”. The commerce and road “vicus” developed very quickly and it became soon a very important trade fair centre, still active until the early 20th century.
In the early Middle Ages this vicus was the capital of the Lomagne Viscounty, and in the late 13th century it became a Bastide. In 1482 the King Louis XI considered Lavit amongst the most importants places of the viscounty together with Lectoure, Miradoux and Castéra-Lectourois.
Saint-Jacques parish church was rebuilt in 1515 with very big dimensions but with very bad materials, so today is the half of the 16th building remains.
