History of Mansonville
The name derives from the German name “Manso” and from the Latin term “villa”.
Mansonville probably had been a stopping-point on the very ancient Roman communication route linking Toulouse to Bordeaux through Lectoure. The early settlement is indicated by some Gallo-Roman remains and Merovingian objects found in the 20th century.
The name of the parish is first recorded in a document of the 11th century in which Moissac Abbey is styled “owner”. Later on it was donated to the Lectoure Diocese; Lectoure bishops used to have a country lodging in Mansonville.
The castle was bought in 1274 by Edward 1st, King of England. His son donated the lordship to Bertrand de Goth in 1313.
Mansonville has known a very active economic and commercial life until the beginning of the 20th century.
